PURPOSE:To obtain a water-soluble lubricating oil composition, containing a specific alkyl polyoxyethylene alkylcarboxylate, having high lubrication performance as well as excellent hard water resistance and useful for hydraulic fluid, metal working oil, etc. CONSTITUTION:A lubricating oil composition consisting of an aqueous solution obtained by blending an alkyl polyoxyethylene alkylcarboxylate expressed by the formula (R<1> is <=24C alkyl or alkenyl; R<2> is 1-5C alkyl; M is alkali metal; n is an integer of 1-10) in an amount of 0.01-50wt%, preferably 0.1-20wt%. Inexpensive industrial water or river water can be utilized as diluting water. The above-mentioned carboxylate is obtained by, e.g. converting an oxyethylene adduct of a higher alcohol into an alkoxide using NaOH and reacting the resultant alkoxide with a halogen-substituted aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, e.g. monochloroacetic acid, etc.
