PURPOSE:To correctly read out the recorded information despite the defective areas of magnetization caused by fine flaws on tracks, etc., by positioning a magnetic head at a target track and moving the head within a range of track width to read out repetitively the recorded information. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic disk device 14 has large track width compared with the gap length of a magnetic head 4. Then, the head 4 is positioned at the center of a target track under the prescribed servo control and reciprocated between both sides and the center position of the track within a range of the track width. The recorded information on the track can read out for each shift of the head 4. The read data is erroneous when the head 4 reads the fine defective areas of magnetization on the track. In many cases, however, these defective areas can be avoided with shifts of the head 4. Thus, the recorded information can be correctly read out despite the defective areas existing on the track.
