PURPOSE:To detect the size of a document in both modes in platen-cover open and closed states by providing plural sensors on an optical carriage. CONSTITUTION:When a platen cover or ADF cover is closed, the light emitting elements of sensors S1-S4 are on while the document 8 is set on the platen glass, so the light receiving elements of the sensors S2-S4 covered with the document 8 are ready to detect reflected light from the document. When the platen cover is closed in this state, an actuator shields the optical paths of the photosensors and their detection signals are outputted. When the signals are inputted to the OR circuit 11 of a controller 10, respective AND circuits 12 AND the output of the OR circuit 11 with the signals of the photosensors to output document detection signals S1'-S4'. Consequently, the document size can be detected regardless of whether the platen cover is open or closed.
