PURPOSE:To contrive the improvement of the MTF (resolution) in a subscanning direction by selecting a read pitch in the subscanning direction as the multiple of integral (2 or above) of the pitch of the subscanning of an output device. CONSTITUTION:The picture is read at a pitch with the multiple of integral (2 or above) of the pitch of the subscanning of the output device during normal one line reading to attain the subscanning reading with a high MTF. Two readings are applied at a double pitch during one line reading and the reading result is outputted at every other pitch, then the subscanning reading with a high MTF is attained. In case of the reading at the pitch of 3 times or above, the reading with high MTF is attained by similar operation. However, in case of such a reading the accumulating time of electric charges is decreased to a half or below and the sensitivity might be halved or below, then it is sometimes desirable to provide the changeover between the high picture quality reading mode and the standard mode.
