391,896. Mortising wood. SIEFF, S. H., Mildmay Park, and BATTLE, G. W., 2, Elmira Street, Lewisham, both in London. Dec. 1, 1931, No. 33285. [Class 145 (i).] In a machine for making shuttlecocks, holes are pierced in the wooden bases by a tool 35 mounted on a carrier 33 moved to the left at the appropriate time by a lever 41 operated by a cam 18. The carrier 33 slides on a quadrant 32 which also supports a second carrier 34 for the feather-inserting mechanism. The quadrant is rocked on its axis so that a hole is pierced in the base 46 and a feather is then automatically inserted in the hole. The base is held in a chuck 49, Fig. 3, secured to a stub shaft 50 pivoted in a spacing head 47. The head is rotated the correct angular distance after each piercing and insertion to bring the next feather position opposite the piercing tool. When the operation is complete the clutch is unlocked by the movement to the right of a member 52 and is then swung into the dotted position, Fig. 3, whereupon the insertion of a new base ejects the finished article. The clutch is then returned to its normal position and relocked and the operation continued. |
