PURPOSE:To shorten the fingerprint collating time by dividing the fingerprint data into plural areas for registration and storage and carrying out coincidence of fingerprint data among the prescribed areas in response to the type of collation. CONSTITUTION:A keyboard contains A, B and C keys showing the types of collation in addition to ten keys. The fingerprint data registered previously by a user includes the fingerprint of a finger F, for example, divided into six areas (a)-(f). These areas are stored in a memory. For the fingerprint of each user, the identification register numbers are registered together with the fingerprint data on each area. Thus the fingerprint data can be read out for each area. When a process A is designated, the areas (b) and (c) are read out of those areas (a)-(f). Then the areas (b), (c) and (f) are read out with designation of a process B together with all areas (a)-(f) read out with designation of a process C for collation respectively. In such a way, the fingerprint collating time is shortened.
