PURPOSE:To prepare the title mesophase pitch, by heat treating a vacuum distillate of petroleum pitch so as to form a mesophase-contg. pitch, aging so as to cause only the mesophase pitch to fuse and grow large, and separating the mesophase pitch by utilizing specific gravity difference. CONSTITUTION:Petroleum pitch as a by-product in the thermal catalytic cracking of a desulfurized vacuum light oil is distilled under reduced pressure, and an 85% cut distillate is extracted with an arom. hydrocarbon. The petroleum pitch thus prepd. is heated at 380-450 deg.C while blowing a non-oxidizing gas thereinto, thereby producing pitch contg. mesophase in an amt. of 5-15%. The pitch is aged so as to cause only the mesophase pitch to fuse and grow large, thereby separating into a lower layer comprising the mesophase pitch and a non-meso pitch upper layer free from the mesophase pitch. Thereafter, the upper layer is taken up, heat treated in substantially the same manner as that described above so as to form 100% mesophase pitch, and separated by utilizing specific gravity difference, thereby preparing the title 100% mesophase pitch.
