PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an additive for the binder of molding sand, without producing by-product, by reacting styrene with phosphorus pentachloride in an inert solvent and adding and reacting excess water to the resultant reaction mixture in the presence of thionyl chloride. CONSTITUTION:Styrene is made to react with phosphorus pentachloride in an inert solvent (preferably benzene or toluene) preferably at 50-80 deg.C. The objective compound is produced by adding more than stoichiometric amount (preferably 1.1-1.3 times mol) of water to the reaction mixture and reacting preferably at 0-30 deg.C for 1-20hr in the presence of thionyl chloride. The molar ratio of phosphorus pentachloride to styrene is preferably 1-2 to 1 and that of thionyl chloride to water is preferably 1.1-2 to 1.
