Alpha-Nitrocarboxylic acid (I), pref. having >=5C atoms, is mixed with sufficient aq. alkali hydroxide or carbonate in a prepd water bath to form salt, pH of mixt, being 5.5-8, this soln is then kept at temp between 80 degrees C and b.p. of soln at atmos press (or slightly elevated press) by addn of further alkali hydroxide/carbonate and kept at pH 5.5-9 until most of I is saponified and then saponification is completed by adding further alkali at pH >9 and at same temp. alpha-Hydroxy acid formed is recovered by precipitation as a substantially water-insoluble neutral or acid salt or by acidification followed by extraction with an org. solvent.
|
