For the purpose of recovering gas from refuse dumps, gas-extraction pipes (4) are inserted in refuse dumps by driving, boring or excavating the required shaft by means of grabs. This process for producing shafts or other caverns is extremely high in outlay and, in view of the extremely inhomogeneous structure of the refuse-dump body (50), extremely arduous. For the simplified production of a shaft, a primary shaft is produced, the cross-sectional dimensions of which are considerably smaller than those of the definitive shaft (30). Explosive is introduced into the primary shaft. The explosion is then carried out, as is thus a displacement of the material delimiting the shaft, that is to say a widening of the narrow shaft to form a considerably enlarged shaft (30) into which the filter pipe (4) can be introduced, whereupon the remaining shaft area is filled with ballast (41). In addition to the substantial saving on large and heavy driving, boring or grab equipment, the invention provides a considerably enlarged shaft-wall surface by adapting the explosive charge to the desired shaft or cavity geometry. <IMAGE>
