The low-temperature carbonisation, known per se, of waste materials in a low-temperature carbonisation drum (1) heated indirectly by fuel gases can be improved, if the fuel gases are used exclusively for low-temperature carbonisation and do not additionally have to preheat a cyclone (5) for the separation of the low-temperature carbonisation gases from the pyrolysis residues, in order to prevent condensation of the low-temperature carbonisation gases in the cyclone (5), but if, instead, a part stream (18) of the low-temperature carbonisation gas (10), heated via a gas converter (11) to at least 1000@C, is passed through a housing (21) around the cyclone (5). In this way, the low-temperature carbonisation drum (1) and the cyclone can be designed independently of one another and, in particular, no gaskets are required on the outer periphery (1) of the rotary drum (1). <IMAGE>
