The peak voltage measuring instrument for measuring ignition voltages of spark-ignited internal combustion engines comprises a probe head (1), a capacitive input voltage divider, a peak voltage store and an indicating unit connected to the peak voltage store. The voltage divider has a coupling capacitor which is accommodated in the probe head and which, in coaxial arrangement, comprises an inner-conductor rod (93) provided with the probe tip, a coupling tube (97) enclosing the inner-conductor rod (93) insulated at a distance over a part of its length and a shielding tube (101) enclosing the coupling tube (97) essentially over its entire length at a distance and insulated. The probe head (1) is connected via a coaxial cable (11) to the peak-voltage store, the inner conductor (107) of the coaxial cable (11) connecting the coupling tube (97) to at least one capacitor of the voltage divider and the outer conductor being connected to the shielding tube (101) and to an earth cable (15) which, in particular, is brought out of the probe head (1). <IMAGE>
