The object of the invention is to improve methods and devices for investigating flows containing particles, such as aerosols, in particular in connection with testing filters, by scattering light from the particles in the flow. To improve the scattered-light intensity and to make it possible to analyse particle size over the flow cross-section using a suitable method, the invention provides for the flow to be scanned over the test volume with a light beam and scattered rays produced by the illuminated particles to be measured, while a device to be used for this purpose is characterised by a measuring cell (31) for the flow having an illuminating device (41, 42, 43, 44) which comprises a light source (41) and a scanning device (42, 43, 44), and by an optical observation system (33) which has a photodetector (3) and whose object plane falls in the region of intersection of the scanning plane of the light and the aerosol jet. <IMAGE>
