To produce seat covers backed by piping strips of foam material, a folded edge of the seating cover is inserted into the first of a number of spaced grooves in the foam plate, which separate the piping strips. The folded edge and the foam are joined together by a seam running parallel to the side of the fold. The next folded fabric edge is inserted into the next groove for stitching into place. A slide pushes the folded fabric edge into the foam groove and is held in place by pressure bar as the slide is withdrawn, so that the seam can be formed between the folded edge and the bar. The bar is then lifted for the slide to insert a further folded edge into the next groove.
