An I.C. engine sound-proofing cowling, e.g. metal sheets with sound-proofing material 25 therebetween, includes at least two side covers 21 and 22 secured to the crank-case 1 and extending as far as the upper edge of the cylinder head 8 to cover the inlet and exhaust manifolds 17 and 18 and a lid 23 mounted on the side covers and covering the rocker box 24. Covers may be provided at the front and rear of the engine. The covers 21, 22 are bolted to the crank-case with interposed packing 27, 28, e. g. rubber or elastic plastics, and packing 3, 7 is provided in the connection of the crank-case portion 5 to the main crank-case 1. The lid 23 is bolted to the front and rear of the cylinder head 8 to exert pressure on the packing 31. between the lid and covers 21, 22. A cooling water conduit 20, communicating with the cylinder head cooling water chamber 19, extends round the exterior of the exhaust manifold 18. An exhaust pipe 32 extends through an opening in the cover 21 sealing by an O-ring 35. An air inlet pipe extends similarly through an opening in the cover 22 to the inlet manifold 17. The covers 21, 22 are bowed outwardly slightly or provided with stiffening corrugations.
