In a false-twist crimping process, multifilamentary yarn of thermoplastic, synthetic material is heated and then brought into contact with an aqueous liquid for a time less than 60% of the heating time, without interrupting the twist running, so that liquid is deposited on the yarn. The liquid is heated by the yarn and vapourises to penetrate between the filaments so that the yarn is uniformly steam-set. The yarn is untreated for a wet-cooling period and is then twisted by a rotating, frictional, false-twisting device. The heating and wet-cooling times are more than D<0>.<7>/80 and D<0>.<5>/500 seconds (where D is the yarn denier). The yarn material may be polycapramide, polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, or copolymers thereof, the liquid is water, with or without additives such as a surface active agent or colloidal silica, and is applied by a roll rotating partly in the liquid or by jetting. Excess liquid spread by centrifugal force of the rotating yarn and the generated vapour are removed pneumatically by suction. In the apparatus shown, yarn Y from bobbin 1 is advanced by feed roller 2, through a heater 3, between a jetting port 10 (adjustably supplied with water &c. from a tank 8 through a cock 9) and a suction port 11, thence through a false-twister 4, delivery roll 5 to be wound into a package 7.
