摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain an optical recording medium on which a signal with high quality is written with a low write power, by using a high polymer material of nematic liquid crystal having a negative dielectric anisotropy and cholestric liquid crystal as an optical recording layer. CONSTITUTION:The high polymer material of nematic liquid crystal having a negative dielectric anisotropy and cholestric liquid crystal is used as an optical recording layer 3. That is, the optical recording layer 3 is provided on a glass substrate 1 provided with a transparent electrode 2, and a light absorbing layer 4 and a reflection electrode substrate 5 are provided on this layer 3. The light of a semiconductor laser is condensed on the light absorbing layer 4 to locally heat the optical recording layer 3 and a voltage having a frequency lower than the cut-off frequency is applied to cause dynamic scattering in the position where the viscosity is reduced by heating, thereby writing information. The written part and its nearby part are heated again by irradiation of the semiconductor laser light and an electric field having a frequency higher than the cut-off frequency is applied, thereby erasing information. Thus, it is unnecessary to heat this medium at a temperature higher than the isotropic liquid transition point similarly to a conventional medium, and information is written with irradiation of the semiconductor laser light relatively low in power.
