PURPOSE:To produce an inorganic glass foam having low water-absorption and high water resistance, at a low temperature, by mixing natural glassy mineral having specific particle size with sodium hydroxide, metallic ion powder, a foaming agent and water, drying the mixture and foaming the product with heat. CONSTITUTION:100pts.wt. of a natural glassy mineral having an average particle diameter of <=20mu is mixed with 15-25pts.wt. of sodium hydroxide (in terms of solid), 0.3-5.0pts.wt. of metallic iron powder and/or an iron compound, 0.1-5 pts.wt. of a foaming agent and >=20pts.wt. of water and the mixture is dried at <=200 deg.C and foamed by heating. The natural glassy mineral is e.g. obsidian, pearlite, pitchstone, shirasu, firestone, etc. The foaming agent is a compound decomposing at about <=900 deg.C and generating gas, e.g. a metal carbonate such as calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, etc., a nitrate such as potassium nitrate, and carbon, SiC, etc.
