A feed unit (5), with a lifting cylinder which forms a first drive unit and whose piston is firmly connected to a first rod extending in the direction of movement of the piston, has a second drive device which has a movable second rod arranged coaxially to the first rod. One of the two rods plunges into the other rod, which is of hollow design at least over part of its length. The two rods can be mechanically coupled to one another by a clutch. In a working apparatus for carrying out an automatic working, assembling or joining procedure requiring a pressure force, the feed unit (5) is provided on a guide device (1), by means of which it can be moved into the correct position for the working procedure. Arranged at a distance from the working location (11) is a supporting device (2) on which the feed unit (5) can be supported in the correct position for the working procedure in order to absorb its reaction force. <IMAGE>
