A lifting pump, especially for pumping petroleum from a deep well, is equipped with a pump cylinder with an upstroke valve installed in the well hole immediately above the level of the liquid, and a piston with an outlet opening which is guided in the cylinder in a sliding fashion and is suspended from rods moved from the surface. The face of the piston has a sealing seat. The surface of the cylinder facing the piston has a sealing element corresponding to the sealing seat. Since the piston falls into the cylinder if a rod breaks, the sealing seat on its face can come to bear against the sealing element when a rod breaks, thus sealing the pump against eruptive emergence of the oil.
