The 4-aryl 1,4-dihydro pyridine deriv. of fomrula (I), for use as a vaso-dilator in treatment of hypertension as a calcium antagonist, is made by (a) reaction of 3-amino crotonitrile (II), obtained by auto-condensn. of acetonitrile in an inert solvent e.g. benzene, with 2-nitro benzaldehyde to give the cpd. of formula (III); and (b) treatment with HCl gas in moist methanol to give the corresp. dieester (I).
