The invention relates to a method and to a speed control circuit for load-dependent speed control of an electric motor, especially for a model railway locomotive. According to the invention, the motor (which is connected as a series-wound motor during switching on) is changed over in a pulsed manner between series-wound operation and shunt-wound operation if a predetermined minimum torque is exceeded, the percentage of the time spent in shunt-wound operation increasing as the load torque increases.
