A device for the metabolic control of mammals in which optical measurements are made inside a suction cup or after withdrawal of blood with a suction cup, direct contact between reagents and the skin being avoided by drainage of blood, so that damage to the skin by the suction process is avoided as far as possible because the strength of the reduced pressure in the suction cup can be controlled individually.
