1271735 Steering column locks G TIBBE 25 July 1969 [10 Aug 1968] 37425/69 Headings B7J and J161E2C A steering column lock for motor vehicles includes a locking mechanism and a bolting mechanism, the locking mechanism comprising an outer cylinder shell 2 and an inner cylindrical plug 3 rotatable within the shell by a key 20, inserted into a longitudinal key channel 4 of the plug closed off at the inner end, between a first and a second angular position and furthermore axially displaceable within the shell between a first and a second axial position, and the bolting mechanism comprising a bolt 7 movable between a releasing and a locking position into which locking position it is urged by a spring 14, a control cam 11 being arranged between the plug and the bolt and connected to the plug for rotation therewith and co-operating with the bolt to move the bolt from the locking into the releasing position upon rotation of the plug from said first to said second angular position, the bolt being maintained in the releasing position upon rotation of the plug from said second to said first angular position until the key is wholly or partially withdrawn, there being provided a spring-loaded catch member 9 connecting the bolt with the plug in said first axial position of the plug and releasing the bolt to run into the locking position when the plug is moved from said first into said second axial position by the withdrawal of the key, the catch member being mounted on the bolt and the key co-operating with at least one tumbler 15 radially movable within the plug to control the said axial movement of the plug and furthermore its movement in opposite direction from said second to said first axial position when the key is introduced into the key channel. As shown, the bolt 7 is kept in the released position by the eccentric portion 11 of the cam 10 and when the plug 3 is rotated by the key 20 the catch member 9 abuts the projection 6 on the cover-plate 5 to prevent the bolt being moved by the spring 14 to the locking position. Withdrawal of the key entrains the plug and cover-plate axially away from the cam due to coupling of the spring- loaded tumbler 15 and the key and projection disengages from the catch member to allow the bolt to move to the locking position; the tumbler, due to axial movement of the plug, becomes positioned in the grooves 18 of the shell 2. Insertion of the key into the plug causes the tumbler to assume the position shown in the figure and the plug to be moved axially by the spring 21, and rotation of the key causes the catch member 9 to ride over the projection 6, the cam being rotated to withdraw the bolt. The plug 3 and cover 5 may be formed as a single element, or the plug 3 may be of two parts axially movable with respect to each other.
