PURPOSE:To rapidly remove the fine foreign matter in pool water at low running cost, by forming a specific multilayer structure filter aid layer to the surface of a porous filter base. CONSTITUTION:The fine powdery filter aid filling a filter aid tank 9 along with water is adsorbed by the surface of the porous filter base 2 arranged in a casing 1 to form a release layer and, thereafter, the fibrous filter aid filling a filter aid tank 10 along with water is adsorbed by the surface of the filter aid layer on the filter base 2 to form a filter aid layer 19 having a multilayer structure on the surface of the filter base 2. The water in a pool is allowed to flow while recirculated through a recirculation pipe 3, the casing 1, the filter base 2 and a recirculation pipe 6 and the foreign matter contained in the pool water is filtered and removed by the filter base 2. Thereafter, washing water is allowed to reversely flow to the filter base 2 from the inside to the outside thereof to peel off the filter aid and foreign matter adhered to the surface of the filter base 2.
