PURPOSE:To keep a converter output current at the minimum and generate a maximum reactive power by controlling a conduction ratio of inverter accord ing to a magnitude of required reactive power. CONSTITUTION:An inverter control circuit Inc generates a current command Is and current phase command thetas corresponding to a current peak value required from an inverter. Said current command Is is compared A with an output current I detected by a current transformer CT and applied to a converter base control circuit Bc to control an each-phase conduction ratio of converter. Also, the phase command thetas is applied to an inverter base control circuit Bi, which sets the conduction ratio at 1 while controlling an each-phase conduction ratio of inverter. Thus, when a reactive power Q is controlled, a command Qs of said power, a detected value of said output current I and an output volt age command Eds are applied to a reactive power control circuit Qc so that a command of given phase angle and converter conduction ratio is generated and applied to the converter base control circuit Bc to control the converter.
