PURPOSE:To detect the sheet material loaded quantity on a sheet receiver invariably and simply with a simple structure by providing a variable resistor changing its resistance value in conjunction with the lift action of the sheet receiver in a copying machine or the like. CONSTITUTION:When image formed sheet materials are loaded on a sheet receiver 25a to the preset height, the sensor lever 36 of a sensor 39 is rotated by a preset angle to turn a switch 37 on, a fork-shaped member 30a is lowered by a lifting motor 36 by a preset quantity, and the sheet materials are loaded in alignment. The resistance value of a variable resistor 59 is gradually changed in conjunction with this descent action, and the loaded quantity of the sheet materials is indirectly detected and displayed on a display unit. When the resistance value of the variable resistor 59 is not changed for a preset time even if the descent command has been issued by the action of the sensor 39, the condition is judged as a failure of the lifting motor 42 or the like, the operation is stopped, and an abnormality is warned. Accordingly, the sheet material loaded quantity can be detected invariably and simply, and a failure of the lifting motor or the like or the occurrence of a jam can be detected.
