Thieno-and Furopyridine sulfonamides of formula <CHEM> wherein X represents -S- or O and the N indicates that the moiety is a pyrido, dihydropyrido or tetrahydropyrido ring with the nitrogen at the 4, 5, 6 or 7 position, are carbonic anhydrase inhibitors useful in the treatment of elevated intraocular pressure and disorders associated therewith such as glaucoma.
