Two hollow metal sections (1,2) are joined together at right angles with a butt joint. A U shaped fitting (4) is secured to the first hollow section by screws (3). This U shaped fitting is a close fit inside the second section which is pushed over the fitting. The fitting has holes (6) in the side surfaces of its legs and the metal of the wall of the second section is deformed by a tool and forced into these holes to form the joint between the two sections. The tool has a stop to locate the second section and sliding punches to deform the metal of this section. The punches are operated manually by a lever and a toggle linkage.
