Ortho-alkylation of para-alkoxyphenols - over gamma-alumina catalysts at low temp with tert alkenes, giving high yields

An o-tert.-alkyl-substd. p-alkoxyphenol is prepd. by alkylating the p-alkoxyphenol with a tert.-alkene at 200 degrees C in the presence of a catalyst consisting wholly or mainly of gamma-alumina. Pref. p-alkoxyphenosl are p-hydroxyanisole and p-hydroxyphenetol, and alkene is isobutylene. The prods. are antioxidants for animal and vegetable fats and oils.
