A signal to be transmitted, such as voice, is converted into digital format and stored. The digital signal is then retrieved at a faster rate than it was originally digitized, and converted again to an analog form which represents the initial analog signal as compressed in time. A carrier signal is then modulated with this compressed analog signal and transmitted. Upon reception, the procedure is reversed. Transmission and reconstruction of such signals can be controlled by a central unit to improve spectral efficiency and minimize transmission collisions.
