Shaped articles such as sheets and coatings of plasticised polyvinyl chloride are coated by applying a solution in an organic solvent of polyvinyl chloride or a vinyl chloride copolymer to the surface and thereafter applying a solution comprising mainly poly -γ- alkylglutamate. Suitable solvents for the vinyl chloride polymer are ketones, e.g. acetone, cyclic ethers, e.g. dioxane, aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. benzene, chlorinated hydrocarbons, e.g. methylene chloride and 1, 2-dichloropropane and ethyl acetate or mixtures of these. The poly -γ- alkyl glutamate component may be a homopolymer such as poly -γ- methylglutamate, poly -γ- ethylglutamate, poly-γ- propylglutamate, or poly -γ- butylglutamate, but copolymers may be used such as a copolymer ofγ- butyl - D - glutamate andγ- methyl - D - glutamate or ofγ- methyl - D - glutamate andγ- methyl - L - glutamate. These compounds may be mixed with a rubber such as polybutene, natural rubber, polychloroprene, acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer, polybutadiene, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, polyvinyl acetate, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, polyalkyl acrylate, polyalkyl methacrylate or a urethane prepolymers. The poly-γ- alkyl glutamate may be modified with a polyurethane resin having terminal active isocyanate groups. The poly -γ- alkyl glutamate coating may be applied by brushing, spraying, gravure coating, roll coating, knife coating or dip coating. The vinyl chloride may be copolymerised with one of many comonomers which are listed. |
