PURPOSE:To speed up the switching between stop operation and a light nontransmission state by using a liquid crystal cell array which is inverted in dielectric anisotropy with frequency, and applying a high frequency voltage and also applying a low frequency voltage. CONSTITUTION:Main electrodes 10a-10e of a late which has two electrodes 7 and 8 on both sides of a transparent electrode 10 and main electrodes 9A-9E of a plate 2 which has a window formation part consisting of a transparent electrode 9 are stacked across liquid crystal which is inverted in dielectric anisotropy with frequency to constitute cell arrays which serve as light transmis sion windows respectively. When this liquid crystal cell is placed in the light nontransmission state, the low frequency voltage is applied to between the transparent electrodes 9 and 10 of the plates 2 and 3 and when the liquid crystal cell is put in a stop state, the high frequency voltage is applied to the plate 2 and the same voltage, one pole of a different voltage, or a low frequency voltage with a voltage waveform obtained by controlling the pulse width is applied to the two electrodes 7 and 8 of the plate 3.
