PURPOSE:To eliminate useless regist time, by opening a registration gate with a time delay preset according to the detection results of the width of an inserted document through a sensor and carrying out positioning optimal for the sheet size. CONSTITUTION:The width of a document is detected by means of a plurality of sensors 2 arranged laterally at a document insertion port 1. A control section 6 obtains the length of the document based on the detected width of the document, and upon elapse of time preset according to said length, a solenoid 5 is energized to open a registration gate 3 so as to lift an idler roll 4. The document is fed by means of a drive roller 7 and the idler roll 4. Consequently, positioning optimal for the detected paper size is made to enable good copy, while the registration time is optimized to eliminate useless regist so as to enable efficient work.
