NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by formula I (R<1>-R<3> are 1-25C alkyl with the proviso that at least one of R<1>-R<3> is >=8C higher alkyl; X<-> is halogen anion, inorganic acid anion or organic acid anion). EXAMPLE:Brominated N<alpha>-dodecyl-N<alpha>,N<alpha>-dimethyllysine. USE:Useful as a surface active agent, detergent, hair rinse base, antistatic agent, etc., showing high safety to skin and hair, excellent surface active action and antistatic action. PREPARATION:The amino group at the position of alpha-amino-epsilon-caprolactam shown by formula II is quaternized and subjected to ring opening in the presence of an alkali in an aqueous solvent under heating at 80-100 deg.C to give a compound shown by formula I.
