GATE CLOSURE DEVICE

A gate closure device for drawing a stretch gate taut during the opening and closing of the gate. The device includes a pair of U-shaped members each having a post engaging loop or bight portion, one for receiving a stationary or fence post and the other a movable post of the gate, and a lever member including a pair of substantially parallel legs joined by a bight portion. The outer ends of the legs of a first one of one of the U-shaped members are connected one each to the legs of the lever member for pivoting of the lever relative to the one U-shaped member about a first transverse axis. The outer ends of the legs of the second U-shaped member are connected one each to the legs of the lever member at a second transverse axis spaced a distance inward from the first transverse axis for relative pivoting of the second U-shaped member relative to the lever member. Thus when the lever member is pivoted from a position wherein it is projecting upwardly from the first U-shaped members to a closed position wherein it is substantially in the same plane as the first U-shaped member, the second axis is moved to a position disposed on the far side of the first transverse axis relative to the loop ox bight portion of the second U-shaped member so that the post engaging portions of the U-shaped members are drawn closer together. at least two of the members, and possibly all three, have openings which align in the closed position for receiving a lock, such as the loop of a padlock. One of the U-shaped members may be in the form of a flexible member, preferably having one end which is readily detachable from the lever member. The device can be readily locked with 2 conventional lock and when a flexible U-shaped member, such as a length of chain is utilized, the device can be used as a portable closer which can be moved from gate to gate.
