PURPOSE:To obtain readily handleable, inexpensive friction material composition, having specific porosity, showing high coefficient of friction from the initial stage of use, by blending specific components such as short fiber cellulose pulp, etc., in a specific ratio and integrating the components with a thermosetting resin binder. CONSTITUTION:A composition consisting of (A) 25-30vol% short fiber cellulose pulp having <=150mum fiber length as a reinforcing fiber material, (B) 30-80vol% organic filler (preferably cork powder and/or cashew dust having <=840mum maximum particle diameter as an organic filler, (C) 2-5vol% aluminum oxide and/or magnesium oxide having <=250mum maximum particle diameter as a friction and wear adjuster and (D) an inorganic filler (e.g. calcium carbonated, etc.) is integrated with a thermosetting resin binder to give a friction material composition suitable for electromagnetic clutch, etc., having 15-30% porosity.
