PURPOSE:To obtain a composition for the oral cavity use, containing an extract or a pulverized material of a polygonum and having safety, unique flavor as well as deodorant effects together. CONSTITUTION:A composition for the oral cavity obtained by blending an extract obtained by extracting a fresh or dried whole herb of a polygonum with water and/or a hydrophilic organic solvent, e.g. lower alcohol or ketone, particularly preferably methanol or pulverized material of the polygonum prepared by finely powdering the whole herb of the fresh polygonum or naturally dried or dried polygonum at a temperature up to about 70 deg.C in an amount of 0.01-10wt%, preferably 0.02-5wt% therein. The composition has excellent deodorant effects on sulfur based compounds, e.g. hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, etc., and is also effective in preventing periodontosis.
