1279934 Belt gearing BRIDGESTONE TIRE KK 3 Dec 1970 [9 Dec 1969] 57573/70 Heading F2Q In a method of splicing together ends 1, 1<SP>1</SP> of a rubber belt having longitudinal steel cords 3, the end 1 is cut to form longitudinally extending projections 2 each consisting of a steel cord embedded in rubber and having a flat surface 2a and a convex surface 2b, and the end 1<SP>1</SP> is cut to form a tongue 7<SP>1</SP> in which grooves 8, having convex bases 8<SP>1</SP> complemental to the convex surfaces 2b, are formed. The projections 2 are brought into engagement with the grooves 8 and the ends bonded together. A rubber cover is then applied to the gap between the ends 1, 1<SP>1</SP> and vulcanized to form a flat continuous surface. The grooves 8 may be cut by an electrically heated cutter having a handle 9, Fig. 8, and a U- shaped knife blade 10 which is adapted to be heated at about 800‹ C. during use by an electric heater enclosed in the handle 9. |
