PURPOSE:To eliminate hindrance to others even if there is not enough space to arrange plural developing device at a development position successively by moving the developing devices of respective colors from their stand-by positions to the development position. CONSTITUTION:The four developing devices 17a-17d are incorporated in a development unit 13 and moved selectively to the development position facing the lowermost point of the photosensitive drum 11. The drum 11 is charged electrostatically and a recording station 5 forms an electrostatic latent image of a picture. When the image is developed, a developing device (e.g. 17a) of corresponding color is moved to the development position and elevated to a prescribed position by a rack 19a and a cam unit 20a and a toner pump 14a is put in operation to circulate toner in a toner tank 15a to the developing device 17a at the development position. When a 1st development recording process is finished, the developing device 17a is lowered and put in the development unit 13 and the toner pump 14a and an electrostatic charging unit 4 turn off at the same time. A latent image is formed again thereafter and a developing device 17b, for example, is moved to the development position to develop the image with the toner in the tank 15b.
