PURPOSE:To improve a conversion efficiency by repeatedly converting a work candidate having many characters with a precedence in a device for converting a phonogram character string to a KANJI (Chinese character) string. CONSTITUTION:When the phonogram character string is inputted, the number of included voice tones is calculated by a register initializing means 11 to obtain the number of syllables, the value is set to an NCHAR register 14, 7 is set as the initializing value of an NP register 13 and an I register 12 is set to 1. After the initializing values of the registers 12-14 are set according to the number of the inputted syllables, whether there is the converted syllable in the first - the seventh successive syllable string of the phonogram character strings fed from an input means 10 or not is checked according to the values of the registers 12, 13 by a conversion control means 16. When all the syllables are not converted, they are fed to a dictionary retrieving means 17 to retrieve the dictionary. At the time of the KANJI, the word candidate having many word characters is converted with the precedence.
