PURPOSE:To contrive an efficient operation and a shorter back washing time, by back-washing small-diameter cooling pipes in two water chambers of a condenser which has independent cooling water systems, through operating inlet and outlet valves for the water chambers and connecting valves between the chambers with appropriate timings under the condition where one of the cooling water systems is stopped. CONSTITUTION:When an outlet valve 2A for a water chamber A is opened and a connecting valve 6 is fully opened from an opening for operation in a serial operating condition (forward washing), a condenser is set into a single-chamber operation in which only forward washing in the water chamber A is performed. When a connecting valve 7 between the inlet side of the water chamber A and the outlet side of a water chamber B is opened, forward washing is performed in the water chamber A, while back washing is performed in the water chamber B by introducing water through the valve 7 and discharging it through a connecting valve 5. When an inlet valve 1A for the water chamber A is then closed, the condenser is set into a single-chamber operation in which only back washing in the water chamber B is performed. When the outlet valve 2A for the water chamber A is closed and one back wash valve 4A is opened to an arbitrary opening, water is permitted to flow sequentially through the connecting valve 7, the water chamber B, the connecting valve 5, the water chamber A and the back wash valve 4A, resulting in back washing in both of the chambers A, B.
