PURPOSE:To measure the position of a moving body based on the corresponding relation between the angle of rotation of a twist rod and the moving distance of the moving body by providing the twist rod rotating with the movement of the moving body. CONSTITUTION:The moving body 2 connected to a wire 5 moves along the support 3 fixed between plates 7, 1 by the action of a drive pulley 4 and a guide 11 prescribing two opposed surfaces of a twist rod 6 having a square cross-sectional shape is mounted to the moving body 2. Further, the twist rod 6 is held to the plates 7, 1 in a freely rotatable manner through bearings 8 and an angle-of rotation detector 9 such as an encoder is mounted to the side end part of the plate 1 through a coupling 10. By this constitution, the twist rod 6 is rotated when the moving body 2 moves. Then, by preliminarily calculating the corresponding relation between the angle of rotation of the twist rod 6 and the moving distance of the moving body, the position of the moving body 2 can be measured from the value detected by the detector 9.
