PURPOSE:To attain a compact dictionary and to convert a KANJI (Chinese character) string even for a vague input by using a syllable code and masking the bit of a specific position. CONSTITUTION:After a phonogram character inputted from an input means 10 is converted to the syllable code for every syllable by a syllable code converting means 11, all relevant word candidates are taken out from the dictionary 14 in a dictionary retrieval mode designated from the input means 10 in a dictionary retrieving means 13. In the dictionary retrieval mode of the dictionary retrieving means 13, the specific bit is masked, similar vocal sound elements are considered to be the same and the required word candidate is retrieved even for the vague input.
