PURPOSE:To reduce the amount of attached coke in the titled method, by carrying out heat exchange of EDC to be fed to a thermal cracking furnace and a high-temperature cracked run-off from the thermal cracking furnace while cooling the cracked run-off gas to a specific temperature and making gas flow velocity of the run-off gas at a specific velocity. CONSTITUTION:In obtaining vinyl chloride monomer by thermally cracking 1,2-dichloroethane (EDC) under pressure, a high-temperature run-off gas from a thermal cracking furnace is subjected to heat exchange with EDC to be fed to the thermal cracking furnace by using a heat exchanger of a structure wherein the cracked run-off gas is cooled to 180-350 deg.C, the flow velocity is 5-20m/s, preferably the cracked gas is circulated to a heat transfer pipe side and liquid EDC is introduced to the furnace in such a way that the heat transfer pipe is dipped in the EDC. Pressure reduction in the heat exchanger carrying out preheating and gasification of EDC is reduced and the amount of coke attached to the heat exchanger can be reduced.
