Terrain information is acquired in a file 10. It advantageously comprises data relating to ground-air threats or forbidden areas. The on-board detection units of the aircraft 20 supply other information on threats. At 30, a working file is set up which synthesises the various items of information originating from the terrain itself and from taking account of the threats. Between an origin point and an end point, the trajectory is then determined by dichotomy, by searching, each time, for an optimal intermediate point, having regard to the data from the working file and to criteria relating to low-level flight and to the admissible detour limits. The process terminates at 90 when the trajectory has been defined point by point with a satisfactory level of detail. <IMAGE>
