The optical memory appts. includes a recording medium on which information is optically recorded along guide grooves from which it is played back. It also includes a first generator providing a tracking signal for causing a laser beam to track the guide groove and a second generator providing a signal indicative of the light quantity of reflected light. A circuit generates a signal corresponding to a direction of passage each time the beam passes through a quide groove on the basis of the output of the two generator.
