The invention relates to a portable apparatus allowing five types of uniaxial tests to be performed at will on soft tissue membranes: - monotonic tension or compression - relaxation - plastic flow - resetting - elastic recovery. The apparatus comprises an electric motor 1, which is the power unit, associated with a screw/nut system 2, a load applier 3 consisting of a rigid body 4 supporting two runners 5 and 6, which are respectively stationary and mobile, solidly attached to the tissue 10 by adhesive bonding, a flexible mechanical linkage 7 comprising a sheath 9 and a cable 8 tensioned by a spring 11. This linkage transmits motion from 2 to 6. The deformation of 10 is a function of the movement of 6, measured from the rotation of 1. The resistive force induced at 10 is measured by strain gauges. The apparatus allows determination of the biomechanical properties of soft tissues in situ, in particular skin in vivo. It can be used for evaluating the effectiveness of cosmetic preparations on living skin. <IMAGE>
