PURPOSE:To improve fuel consumption and an output through arbitrary variation of a compression ratio by moving the position of a crank shaft, by a method wherein, in a reciprocating engine, the bearing part of a crank shaft is positioned independently and formed movably. CONSTITUTION:An engine is provided with elements, e.g. a cylinder block 1, a piston 2, a connecting rod 3 and a crank shaft 4. In this case, by simultaneously moving a plurality of chains 7, each worm gear 6 is rotated to rotate a bearing part 5 of a crank shaft 4. The rotation centers of the bearing part 5 and the crank shaft 4 are displaced from each other, and through movement of the rotation center of the crank shaft 4 along with rotation of the bearing part 5, a compression ratio is changed. With this state, with the bearing part 5 rotated, the rotation is stopped in an arbitrary position to provide a compression ratio. This constitution enables a compression ratio to be changed simply and even during running.
