PURPOSE:To prevent diffusion of fuel, to perform excellent stratified combustion of air-fuel mixture by using a small amount of fuel, and to improve fuel consumption, by a method wherein, during stratified combustion of air-fuel mixture, fuel is fed in a state in that an ignition plug is caused to effect multi-ignition, and simultaneously with the feed of the fuel, stratified combustion of air-fuel mixture is effected. CONSTITUTION:Combustible air-fuel mixture is deviated around an ignition plug 12 of a combustion chamber 4, and stratified combustion of air-fuel mixture is performed. In this case, a means 13 is provided for feeding fuel directly to a position around the ignition plug 12 of the combustion chamber 4. Further, a means 40 is provided for controlling the fuel feed means 13 so that fuel is fed during the latter stage of a compression stroke. Moreover, a means 41 is provided for controlling ignition of the ignition plug 12 so that multi-ignition is effected in a range of from a timing earlier than the fuel feed timing of the control means 40 to a fuel feed timing. Stratified air-fuel mixture is performed simultaneously with the feed of the fuel, the fuel is prevented from diffusion. This constitution improves the degree of stratification and improvement of fuel consumption.
